Both give a modern, low-maintenance finish, but they behave differently. Here is how to pick the right one for your property.
Silicone thin-coat and monocouche are the two most common modern renders in the UK. They look similar once finished, but the systems behind them are quite different.
Silicone thin-coat
Applied at 1.5–3mm over a reinforced basecoat, silicone render is flexible, highly breathable and water repellent. It resists cracking, sheds dirt in the rain and comes pre-coloured, so there is no painting afterwards. It is the standard choice over insulation boards.
Monocouche
A through-coloured cement-based render applied in a single thicker pass, usually 15mm, and scraped back. It is robust and cost-effective on masonry, but it is more rigid, so movement joints and good substrate preparation matter a great deal.
Which to pick
If you are insulating, choose silicone. If you are rendering directly onto sound blockwork and want a traditional, hard-wearing finish at a lower cost, monocouche is a sensible option.
